from 388 reviewsThis is my 3rd penguin, I'm still flying my first, but I also bought the rtf model and had larger motors on it and lost it in the swamp at out my flying field. So I orderd my 3rd one with the flight controller installed. I owne the sailfish and the dolphin, but I fly fpv this penguin ten times more. Fun plane.
Top service and fast shipping :-D
Very easy to build with flexibilty to install on several different aircraft
They were delivered in a reasonable amount of time, nose pieces and props were packed well.
🚀 ATOMRC Penguin Review (Final Revision)
✈️ Flight Performance & Modifications
After installing a tiltable camera holder in the nose, the Penguin flies exceptionally well. This modification allows me to utilize its unique low-speed capabilities. I especially appreciate its ability to hover for easy hand-catching, which prevents it from landing in the mud. This hover ability is key, as it lets me fly like a quad close to the ground but then leverage the efficiency of a fixed-wing plane.
⚙️ Power System Upgrade
I immediately upgraded the power system to a reliable T-motor F90. I often hear OEM kits are provided with lower-quality components, and since I had a spare F90 that I already trust from my quad builds, the swap was necessary for peace of mind. The versatility is fantastic—it can handle anything from a long-range 4S Li-ion setup to a high-power 6S LiHV pack. The good news is that the OEM power system I removed seems very light and will be repurposed for upcoming indoor RC plane projects.
📝 Requested Improvements
If I have to find fault, my main wishes would be for the aircraft to come with a hardened plastic skin for better durability and to be more stable at high speed.
I have most of the fixed wings that AtomRC has to offer. The Flying Fish is the fixed wing I fly the most and in some of the coolest places. I have 3 of them and each 1 I got were different with motor KV. The last 1 I bought came with 3500kv 1105s. Since I have burnt up the ESC (my fault) on the first 2 with higher kv motors on 4s and 3 inch props, I decided to go with 65mm bi props on a 450 4s and the performance is AMAZING. Extremely fast and efficient! I have a Matek FC on mine and it shows about 10amps at full throttle for serveral minutes. I hope Atom RC keeps making this plane because I need more of them. With the 4s setup, I can fly for over 25 minutes easily.
This VTX came with the flying fish that I bought from AtomRC. It outperforms the other VTXs (that cost more) around the same power range and cheaper. IRC tramp works perfect and I havent had any voltage spike issues.
I found this very easy to install and works absolutely fantastic. Would recommend it to anybody thank you.
This thing is awesome. Small and compact it can fit anywhere. Takes off easy with a slit push forward while motors are at half throttle. Climb out is stable and predictable. Long flight times with the right pack. Its not much room for big pack, so nothing over 660mah 3s.
Initially I was going to use something bigger (and heavier) for my Dolphin Pro. This one seem to be working perfectly with 6s Li-Ion pack. I've only used bigger ESC (that's what I had). So far - no issues. Also a super fast delivery to the Netherlands.
All products were send fast and arrived well.
First let me say I believe i purchased the grey kit. What showed up was a white one! This isn't a deal breaker, I had plans for the grey one. Review time. This new slightly larger version is awesome. The first Dolphin had plenty of room in both bays. This version has huge bays! The electronics bay was well thought out. The opening in the rear fir motor mount is just big enough to slide slim 40a-50a guard esc. Im using a 70a Sequre esc, which slide through the opening without issue. The tray cover that goes over or covers the servo leads is a grwat benefit. Allowing for a clean set up. Room for everything with plenty of seperation. Batter bay looks like it can hold a 10,000mah pack with ease! The fpv nose options are should suit everyone from anolog to HD. The cockpit cover is crazy! Highly doubt id use it, but nove to have. A clear canopy would be mint! Making it possible for any type of weather. Let's talk about connections! The wing and vertical fin/ Rudders simply click in. The main wing halves have a sprung release button. While the fins need a small flat head screw driver to release them. If you purchased the kit as I did you'll need to make so.e mods. Firstly the rudder servo cables need to be shortened and mounted properly. The mounting area has servo pins that need to meet the servo plug correctly. The wing lock housing has the same set up, but you'll need to carefully remove the cover. Make connection and replace cover. Remember theirs a spring inside! Other than those small tips this wing/ plane looks fast sitting still. For size comparison I sat the dolphine on top of a T2 cruza as seen in review picture.
Thank you ATOMRC for the great product you've sent. The delivery was fast, and the packing was good and everything inside was intact.
I already have the swordfish and it was easy to put together and flew right from the start, so I had to get the Dolphin as well.
It was also pretty straightforward to put it together as well and I have yet to maiden it. So far so good Atomrc.
